4’s and 5’s Preschool Program

When you walk into the classroom you will see young children learning they way they do best – through play. The room is intentioally set up with learning centers that provide inviting, engaging ways for children to explore God’s world in an interactive way.

Please visit our Facebook page to get a glimpse into our days! There are also some Preschool Minute videos that you might find useful.

Welcome to our Room! This page will briefly cover some important topics and procedures in our room. Please let me know if you have questions.

How do we learn? Our official curriculum is “Creative Curriculum”, with a good dose of the Reggio Emilia approach. In a nutshell, we believe that children’s play is their work. We provide them with many different ways to explore and learn about their world. We listen to their conversations, provide them with the tools to further their learning, and document their progress as we go. Parent-Teacher Conferences are held twice a year to discuss your child’s development.

Your Child’s Faith Life: We strongly feel that parents are their child’s primary faith teachers. We are proud to partner with you in this most important progress! If you are seeking a home church, we invite you to consider St. John Lutheran Church.

What are the class rules? In everything we do, we try to model kindness, good manners, cooperation, problem solving, and respect for others and the environment. We understand that children will not master these skills at this age, it is something to consistently practice. So, our main class rules are very simple:
* Nice Hands, Nice Words
* Listen to the Teachers
* Put away your toys when you’re done.
Our discipline is based on Interaction vs. Intervention. If the teachers are helping the children practice good manners, we have to discipline less. However, if one or two reminders aren’t working, a short time-away is used. We also have time-outs for hitting or hurting. Our phrase is, “If you hit, you sit.”  Thankfully we don’t have to use that one too often!

How do I find information? There are some areas to check each day as you arrive or leave for notes, etc.
* Your child’s cubby. Your weekly Parent Note will be there on Monday. Also, any notes regarding your child from the day. (Accident notes, nap needs, etc.) Please check this daily as it can get a little full!
* Your child’s hook. Often when children have an accident, we hang the bag containing the clothes there. (They don’t smell very nice if left overnight!)
* Our Website. Our web address is www.stjohnseward.org/cdc
* Facebook Look for daily photos of what we’ve been working on! Even if you don’t have a Facebook account you can still go to www.facebook.com/stjohncdc.
* E-Mail is the main form of communication so be sure to check it regularly.

What should my child bring? We have come up with a list of items that are OK to bring, and also help us learn about our world!
* Anything from nature – feathers, rocks, leaves, if it’s alive, bring it in an appropriate container, please! (Ask Mrs Sommerer about the snake.)
* A small stuffed animal or baby doll for nap. (It should be small enough to fit in your child’s cubby.)
* A book

Anything else should stay at home. Thank you for your understanding in this matter! As far as school supplies, you do not need to bring anything. We have classroom supplies of glue, markers, crayons, etc. On the subject of backpacks, I really would prefer that your child not bring one. Our coat area is rather small and when winter approaches, things fall off of our hooks because there is not enough room. However, if you have already bought one and your child is SUPER excited to bring it, it is welcome during the warm months. ☺

Nap Needs: If your child will be napping with us, please send in a small pillow (not bed-sized), a blanket, and a crib sheet. We will provide a bag to store them in during the week, and bags will be sent home at the end of the week for nap things to be laundered.

If you ever have questions, please feel free to ask! We try to be very thorough with the information we send home and post, but occasionally information gets lost. We’re so glad that we will be working together this year!
