Each year our Confirmands are encouraged to engage in service towards their neighbor. Students are provided a form so they can log the 20 hours worked over the course of the year. After two years of Confirmation, each student will have fulfilled 40 hours of service towards someone other than themselves!
The basis for asking our students to engage in service opportunties is primarily two-fold: First, we are drawn to the One, Jesus, who served us all in the greatest way by giving us forgiveness and life through His death and resurrection. [Jesus said] “the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). Second, we are reminded that out of thankfulness for God’s service to us in Christ, we return that service. However, God doesn’t need it! But our neighbor does. So in our vocation of neighbor, student, friend, and more we serve those around us simply to tell God “thanks” and to share God’s love through deed. [Jesus said] “‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:40).
If a confirmation student has lost a form, a new Confirmation Servant Hours form can be printed here.
